DescriptionBethnal Green and Bow lies in the Borough of Tower Hamlets in the heart of London's traditional East End - a varied constituency which contains the Crown Jewels, Brick Lane, Spitalfields, the Royal London Hospital and the Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood. Brick Lane, which was popularised in Monica Ali's prize-winning book, is becoming an increasingly cosmopolitan and upmarket housing area. Since the 16th century, Tower Hamlets has been home to a succession of immigrants - from the Huguenots to the Irish, Jews, Africans, Chinese, Somalis, West Indians, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis. At the 2001 census the Muslim population numbered 45,000 or just over 39% of the total - the second highest in the country. Unemployment is high - at 11.2%. Approximately 60% have no car and 82.5% are flat-dwellers. In the 1997 General Election the BNP saved their deposit here, although they failed to do so in 2001. Between 1986 and 1994 the Liberal Democrats controlled Tower Hamlets council but since then Labour has been in control. This seat was formerly held (as Bethnal Green and Stepney) by the long-serving former Labour Minister, Peter Shore. At the 1997 General Election, one of Labour's new generation of women MPs, Oona King, a former aide to Glenys Kinnock and a union official (GMB) won the new seat. In 2001, she increased her vote to 50% of the total and her majority to some 10,000 votes. She has been criticised since by some Muslim voters in the constituency over supporting the Iraq war. Former Labour MP George Galloway is standing against her for the small Respect Party and is hoping to capitalise on anti-war sentiments.
