Description | The constituency is sprawling and rural - its main towns are Wroxham and Dereham - and while it has a remarkably low unemployment rate, the western half of the constituency (that within Breckland Council) has been given European Objective 2 status. This is in recognition of the problems of rural deprivation and of underemployment, more of a problem here than unemployment. Most employment is in agriculture and small firms, but is not well-paid. There are few large employers in the constituency, but the most important of these is frozen food giant Bernard Matthews, based at Great Witchingham. The local turkey industry, important in northern Norfolk, has a strong relationship with this company. Elsewhere, some investment in regeneration is being made. The Gressenhall Project near Dereham has transformed a former workhouse into a rural life museum, Roots of Norfolk. Despite a close shave in 1997, Tory MP Keith Simpson has managed to restore his majority to a healthy 8.7%.
