Info | Councilman Martin J. Sweeney was born and raised in the community in which he serves. "This is one of the greatest privileges I could have, being able to give something back to the community I have always loved," he commented.
Councilman Sweeney, now in his second full term as a council member, currently serves as Majority Leader for the 21-member Cleveland City Council. In that role, he helps shape the direction of the Council and works to foster agreement among the diverse members of City Council. He also is the chairperson of the Public Services Committee, responsible for overseeing all matters relating to street and sewer improvements, waste collection and disposal and all matters relating to Cleveland's Department of Public Service.
In addition, he serves as Vice Chair for the Finance Committee and the Aviation and Transportation Committee and is a member of the Public Parks, Recreation & Properties and Public Utilities Committees.
And, he still finds time to respond constituents directly, listen to their concerns and offer solutions. Councilman Sweeney's top priorities are to improve the neighborhoods with safer streets, increase police visibility, enhance housing stock and bring a more responsive city government his constituents.
Councilman Sweeney's mission as a member of Cleveland City Council includes improving the prospects for success of Ward 20 residents and businesses. Among his notable achievements is his recent work to bring a large food distribution company to Ward 20 and ensuring Cleveland residents receive jobs from the company in the process.
A graduate of St. Ignatius High School, Councilman Sweeney earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Cleveland State University and was a member of the 1986 Cleveland State basketball team that reached the "Sweet 16" in the NCAA tournaments.
Prior to his work on council, Sweeney was the Assistant Director for the Clerk of Cleveland Municipal Court, Civil Division. He was responsible for the day-to-day operations of more than 70 employees. In addition, he served Cuyahoga County as an Adult Felony Probation officer.
Sweeney and his wife, Katherine, have four daughters and reside on West 133rd Street, across from Jefferson Park.
