Info | Zack Reed was installed into Cleveland City Council December 11, 2000, immediately staking his claim and setting the tone for his public service by paraphrasing President John F. Kennedy: "Let it be known that the torch has been passed to a new generation of African American leaders."
Currently, Reed is chairperson of the Public Safety Committee and is a member of the Employment, Affirmative Action & Training; Finance; Community & Economic Development and Aviation & Transportation Committees. In addition, Reed is a member of the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials.
Reed grew up on East 139th Street in Mount Pleasant and graduated from the Cleveland Municipal School District. He attended Robert Fulton Elementary, Alexander Hamilton Junior High and John F. Kennedy High School. Reed also attended Golden Gate University and Cleveland State University where he studied Political Science.
Reed's plans for Ward 3 include:
Continuing to work with Fourth District Police to decrease crime;
Creating a favorable environment for economic development;
Providing affordable housing, especially along Kinsman and Union Avenues;
Working with RTA for Community Circulator buses;
Establishing a post office for Mt. Pleasant residents; and,
Rebuilding A. J. Rickoff Elementary School.
A highlight of Reed's vision is his "Three E" Plan. He sees establishing Economic, Education and Entertainment corridors in Mount Pleasant as keys to its revitalization.
Already there is a new energy and vitality in Ward 3. While Reed is enthusiastic about his responsibilities, he stresses John F. Kennedy's quote, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." Reed sees a need for more leaders, for block clubs and for PTA participants. He says to constituents in Ward 3 "I am here fighting on your behalf. Where will you be?"
