InfoSonny Perdue was born on December 20, 1946, in Perry, Georgia, to Ervin, a farmer, and Ophie, a teacher. Perdue attended Warner Robins High School and earned a doctorate in veterinary medicine from the University of Georgia. While at UGA, he played Georgia Bulldogs football as a walk on. He served in the United States Air Force from 1971 to 1974 and retired with the rank of Captain. Following a brief tenure as a practicing veterinarian in Raleigh, North Carolina, Perdue returned to Georgia and became a successful small-business owner in agribusiness and transportation. He is currently the owner of Houston Food and Grain and Agrostar, Inc. Both are based in Bonaire.

Sonny Perdue has served his local community, Central Georgia, his state and the nation for his entire adult life. He has been a businessman, community leader, Sunday School teacher, State Senator, Senate Majority Leader and President Pro Tempore of the Georgia State Senate, as well as an officer in the United States Air Force. As a State Senator, Sonny was recognized as a leading authority on numerous issues including agriculture, transportation, education, emerging technologies and economic development.
