Info | On March 24, 1998, John MacDonell was elected to the Legislature. He joined 18 other New Democrats to form the largest NDP caucus in Nova Scotia history and was re-elected in 1999 and 2003.
John, 43, was raised in Enfield, Hants County on the farm that has been in the family since 1877.
John has been a science teacher at Hants East Rural High School for 15 years.
He was educated at Acadia University where he earned his B.Sc., and at St. Mary's University where he earned his B.Ed.
In addition to teaching, John and his family operate the MacDonnell family farm, keeping a small flock of sheep and a Christmas tree operation.
He is a member of the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture and other livestock associations. John was the first president of the first Hants East NDP riding association and has been involved in the New Democratic Party for about four years.
John is the NDP critic for Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Resources. He has worked hard to ensure government helps sustain and protect Nova Scotia's agricultural sector. He introduced legislation to provide badly needed drought relief to farmers.
He is married to Leslie Mackie and they have four children, Edward, Lydia, Hillary and Kelton.
