Info | Mrs. Sylvia Mae Profitt Weinstein
Sylvia Weinstein, a longtime socialist activist in San Francisco, died Tuesday at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness at the age of 75.
Born in Kentucky, Ms. Weinstein became a socialist during World War II, when her seaman husband, Nat Weinstein, met a socialist on a ship and wrote her a letter about the experience.
"She saved it after all these years," Nat Weinstein said. "She thought I had become a Jehovah's Witness. Neither one of us was political (at the time). "
Ms. Weinstein lived in New York in the early 1960s, running unsuccessfully for the City Council and the post of lieutenant governor. In 1966, she moved to San Francisco, where she ran for mayor, supervisor and Board of Education posts as a socialist candidate in the 1970s and '80s.
(..)
During her 57 years as a socialist, Ms. Weinstein was a member of the Socialist Workers Party, Socialist Action and most recently, the Socialist Workers Organization.
