InfoSenator Bob Martin of Morris Plains was sworn in as a member of the New Jersey Senate in 1993, after having served more than eight years in the General Assembly. In January of 1994, Martin was appointed Senate Assistant Majority Leader, a position he held until his appointment as Chair of the Senate Education Committee in 1988. He serves on the Senate Judiciary Committee, the Senate State Government Committee and is Co-Chair of the Joint Committee on the Public Schools.

As a trained educator and attorney, Martin is the Director of the Center of State & Local Government Law at the Seton Hall University School of Law where he teaches Constitutional Law; Legislation; State and Local Government Law; and Law & Education. He has represented numerous communities as municipal attorney, municipal prosecutor and attorney to the board of adjustment. Martin holds a B.A. from Dickinson College, an M.A. from Lehigh University, a J.D. from Seton Hall University Law School, an L.L.M. from New York University School of Law, and an Ed.D in School Law from Teachers College, Columbia University (scheduled for May, 2003). Martin earned a Diplomat in New Jersey Municipal Law, Rutgers University and the New Jersey Institute of Municipal Attorneys; Legislative Leaders Advanced Management Certificate Program, Darden Graduate School of the University of Virginia; and a Henry Toll Fellow, Council of State Government and Leadership and Training Program. He is the former Chairman of the History and Political Science Department at County College of Morris where he taught State and Local Government; Constitutional Law; and Business Law.

A native of New Jersey, Martin began his political career as a Morris Plains Councilman and Planning Board member. A veteran, Martin served as a 1st Lieutenant with the First Infantry Division (the "Big Red One"), 1969-71.

Senator Martin sponsored the September 11th, 2001 Anti-Terrorism Act, the Open Public Records Act, and the Greystone Psychiatric Hospital Open Space legislation as well as legislation to address many other major reform issues involving education, open-space preservation, crime prevention and good government.

Married to Karen MacKinnon Martin, a professor at the County College of Morris, Martin has three daughters: Elizabeth, Katherine, and Amanda. He resides in Morris Plains where he is active in local church and service organizations. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the New Jersey Institute of Continuing Legal Education and serves as the New Jersey Representative to the Council of State Governments.
