Info | José María Figueres is Co-Chief Executive Officer of the World Economic Forum. He was President of Costa Rica from 1994 to 1998 - the youngest president of any Central American country in modern times.
José María Figueres completed his undergraduate studies in engineering at West Point, the United States Military Academy. Immediately after graduation he joined an agro-industrial holding group in Central America. He thereafter spent the next ten years in the private sector, accumulating a solid business experience.
Mr Figueres' political career began in 1988 when he was asked by President Oscar Arias, Nobel Peace Laurate, to serve in his government (1986-1990). He was initially Minister of Foreign Trade and later Minister of Agriculture. At the end of his term Mr. Figueres attended the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, where he obtained a Masters degree in Public Administration.
Upon returning to his country he announced his candidacy for the Presidency of Costa Rica. After wining the nomination of the Liberación Nacional Party, he went on to win the elections of 1994. He made Sustainable Development the main strategy of his government, and therefore implemented far reaching reforms which moved Costa Rica into a cycle of high economic growth. He also introduced high technology into his country, by attracting a cluster of high tech industries to establish themselves in Costa Rica, including INTEL.
Mr. Figueres has served on the boards of a number of non-profit organizations including the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), FUNDES Internacional, and the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI). He continues to serve on the board of the World Resources Institute, and the Costa Rican Foundation for Sustainable Development.
