Info | A successful lawyer, arts advocate and leader in the women's business community, Sarmite Bulte was first elected to the House of Commons in June 1997. She was re-elected in November 2000 and June 2004.
Since July 2004, Ms. Bulte has served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Canadian Heritage, a position she also held from August 2000 to January 2003.
From November 2002 to October 2003, Ms. Bulte served as the Chair of the Prime Minister's Task Force on Women Entrepreneurs. Among her many activities, she has chaired the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, the sub-Committee of International Trade, Trade Disputes and Investment, the Liberal Caucus Committee on the Canadian Radio-Television Telecommunications Commission, and the Baltic States Friendship Group.
Ms. Bulte was also a member of the Prime Minister's Task Force on Youth Entrepreneurs, the Liberal Caucus Task Force on Financial Institutions and the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration.
An energetic advocate for women entrepreneurs and the arts in Canada, she is a founding member and former Vice-President, International Women Entrepreneurs of Canada (WEC), and a founding member and past director of the WEC Foundation. Ms. Bulte is also past President and past Chair of The Canadian Stage Company, one of the largest not-for-profit theatres in Canada.
In October 1998, Ms. Bulte was presented with the Canadian Embassy's Award for Outstanding Contribution to Businesswomen Associations in Canada.
She and her husband, Dr. Steven Treiber, have three children.
