| Info | The Honourable Art Eggleton brought his experience as Toronto's longest serving Mayor to the Liberal team as MP for York Centre in 1993. He was re-elected in 1997 and in 2000. He is currently a member of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade.
He served as Minister of National Defence from June 1997 until June 2002.
Previously, Mr. Eggleton had served in Cabinet as Minister for International Trade between January 1996 and June 1997. He was named President of the Treasury Board and Minister Responsible for Infrastructure in November 1993.
At Treasury Board, he was a key player in the Program Review process and was central to the success of the Canada Infrastructure Works Program. At International Trade, he carried forward the government's trade expansion policies, concluding free trade agreements with Chile and Israel.
Before entering federal politics, Mr. Eggleton spent 22 years on Toronto City Council, serving as mayor from 1980 to 1991. In addition, he has served on the Metropolitan Toronto Police Commission, the Board of the Canadian National Exhibition and numerous committees and task forces dealing with community issues. In 1992, he received Toronto's highest honour, the Civic Award of Merit.
Mr. Eggleton has one child.
