My name is David Sadler.
I am married to Allison, who was born in St. Louis, MO. We have two children, Stephanie (13) and Adam (11). We live in a rural area between Du Quoin and Pinckneyville in Perry County, Illinois.
I was born on January 8, 1952 in McLeansboro, Illinois.
I attended a one room public school - Anderson school - until the third grade. I finished my elementary education at East Side Grade School & graduated from McLeansboro Township High School in 1970, both in Mcleansboro.
I attended one year at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois before transferring to the University of Oklahoma in Norman where I received a BA in Communications in 1974. I briefly attended SIU-Carbondale to pursue an MBA, but withdrew to pursue a self-taught education in computers in 1977.
I worked pipeline construction from 1970 through 1983. I was a member of the Pipeliners’ Union Local 798 out of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Pipeline construction funded my college and established my independence in life after college.
In 1983, I switched careers to computers, first selling them for Illinois Computer Mart in Carbondale, then managing a computer retail store for Computer Corner in Mt. Vernon, Illinois.
In 1985, I established my software development business, Diversified Computer Applications, first under an assumed business name, then, in the early 1990’s, as a privately held Illinois 'S' corporation.
As a blue collar worker, I carried a lunch pail and made my living with my hands. I saw life from the point of view of laborers and union members. I traveled the US constructing cross-country pipelines. I worked from the Smoky Mountains of Virginia to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, Utah and Montana to the Alaskan & Brooks Mountain ranges of Alaska. I worked in the deserts of West Texas to the high Red Desert of Wyoming. I worked in the forests of the northern tier states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota. I lived in towns with names such as Thief River Falls, Minnesota; Sweetwater, Texas; Plentywood, Montana; Manila, Utah; Old Man & Cold Foot, Alaska during construction of the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline. I mention these names, because they represent rural America and outpost (frontier) America. These names will contrast starkly with the names that will follow.
To my blue collar brothers and sisters, " I’ve been where you’ve been. I know what you are up against. I haven’t forgotten."
As a white collar independent computer consultant, I’ve eaten in some fancy, metropolitan establishments and made my living with my head. I've seen life from the point of view of city dwellers. I’ve worked in high rises. I’ve created IT solutions for icons of American industrial and technological achievement including Dow Chemical, Union Carbide (now part of Dow), Eastman Kodak, Pfizer, Corning, USWest Communications (now part of Quest) and Sprint. I've been a part of the explosive growth in corporate Information Technology and understand the strengths and vulnerabilities associated with a high-tech society. I’ve worked in places such as Houston, Denver, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, DC; Anchorage / Prudhoe Bay and Valdez, Alaska.
To my white collar colleagues and fellow business owners, " I’ve been where you’ve been. I know what you are up against. I haven’t forgotten."
