Info | The son of immigrants who made their way to Toronto 53 years ago, John grew up in the working class neighbourhood of Dufferin and St. Clair. John and his family believed in Toronto and its future like today's immigrants who choose to make Toronto their home. They worked hard to make a better life for themselves, contributing to their new community and helping Toronto become one of the world's great cities and the most multi-cultural city in the world.
John attended his neighborhood high school Runnymede Collegiate and was elected President of the Student Council. He then became the first member of his family to obtain a university degree, graduating from York University and then attending Osgoode Hall where he completed a Law Degree. John's commitment to serving the people of Toronto began while he was a law student when, at the age of 23, he was elected Alderman in the City of York. After two consecutive terms, his constituents elected him to Parliament for four consecutive terms.
A strong leader with integrity who believes in keeping promises, John made history in 1996 when he stood up to Prime Minister Chretien over the Liberal government's failure to keep their campaign promise to eliminate the GST. John left the Liberal caucus, remaining in Parliament to serve his constituents as an Independent. Voters rewarded him for his integrity by re-electing him as an independent Member of the House of Commons in 1997. Maclean's Magazine listed John as one of the top 10 MPs in the country. After leaving federal politics in 2000, John joined Mandrake, a leading Toronto-based consulting firm where he launched the firm's successful new business Nex Career Management.
John continues to be an independent thinker when it comes to tackling the tough issues. Like most Torontonians, John is not a member of a political party.
He believes the people of Toronto want their new Mayor to stand up for Toronto and work with Toronto's business community to protect jobs and address the challenges of SARS, high taxes, crime, declining infrastructure and tourism. He was the first mayoralty candidate to call for an emergency debate on SARS, the day after Toronto Council Council chose not to address the issue in a 3-day Council meeting.
John Nunziata leads by example through the three I's: Ideas, Integrity and Independent thinking. He wants to listen to the ideas the people of Toronto have to help Toronto continue to be one of the world's great cities. He wants to work with Council to restore people's confidence in the integrity of City Hall and stand up for Toronto with other levels of government. And he wants to bring his experience, values and vision to the people of Toronto, knowing that Torontonians of all backgrounds want the option to choose what the future will hold for Toronto.
A family man, John and his wife Caroline have three children: Patrick, Lauren and Matthew. John Nunziata believes that the next generation of Torontonians deserves better city government. Over the course of the campaign, he will demonstrate to the people of Toronto that he has the values, the vision and the commitment to lead Toronto to an even brighter future.
