| Info | Jim Prentice is 47 years old. He was raised in a large, blue-collar family in northern Ontario and Alberta. His dad was a professional hockey player in the 1940s, playing five games in the NHL. Jim put himself through university (U of A and Dalhousie) working "under the bins" in the coal mines of Crowsnest Pass.
Jim has been married to Karen Prentice, an executive Vice-President at a Calgary energy company, for 20 years. They have three daughters, Christina, Cassia, and Kate.
Jim has lived in Calgary North Centre for 20 years. His kids were born and raised here. He served for seven years on the Board of Directors at the Calgary Winter Club, including stints as President and Chairman during the Club's multi-million dollar expansion. He is an active member and volunteer leader in the Grace Presbyterian Church. In his free time he has volunteered as an advocate for learning-disabled kids. "I'm a big believer in a level playing field for children with special needs." He also coached kids hockey, including one team that went to the championships.
A local lawyer, he specializes in property rights and has handled a number of relocations, environmental protection suits, and cases arising from restricted development areas. He also served as a Commissioner of the Indian Claims Commission of Canada for 10 years and is recognized as an expert in land claims negotiations. He travelled to South Africa twice as an expert advisor on how to protect property rights in that country's new constitution. Also a businessman, Jim has owned and operated weekly newspapers and is currently part-owner of a retail business.
Jim became involved in conservative politics in 1976 and has been active ever since. After Preston Manning retired in 2001, Jim won the PC nomination in Calgary Southwest. He then stepped aside to permit then-newly elected Alliance Leader, Stephen Harper, to gain entry to Parliament. "It was a very difficult decision," says Jim, "and very disappointing to me and many supporters. But I believed we needed to turn down the temperature between our two parties, and I’m told my decision helped do that."
Jim ran for the leadership of the PC Party of Canada in 2003, and placed a close second to Peter MacKay. During that campaign, Jim put the question of greater cooperation between the PC and CA parties onto the campaign agenda, saying that no one had ever defeated the Liberals with a divided conservative family. Consistent with that position, Jim was a supporter of the merger since endorsed by both the CA and PC parties.
Jim was nominated to be the Conservative Party's candidate in Calgary North Centre on March 13, 2004, and was elected to the House of Commons in the general election of June 28, 2004.
After being sworn in as the MP for Calgary Centre North on July 16, Conservative Party Leader Stephen Harper named Jim to be the Official Opposition Critic for Indian and Northern Affairs. In that role, Jim has taken the lead in Parliament in opposing the Tlicho land claim agreement, which he says will make Canada ungovernable in 50 years. He is also a strong supporter of the Mackenzie Valley gas pipeline, and has taken the government to task on its treatment of aboriginal women, and its wasted money administering the Residential School Claims program for aboriginal victims of abuse.
