InfoI have been a resident of Burnaby for 25 years and raised two my children who are recipients of our wonderful public school system.

I worked as a psychologist in my homeland after I received my MA in clinical and counselling psychology in 1982, so I opened my own business of counselling and communication services in 1998 after I finished necessary training here. Also I have kept volunteering in my community as a Girl Guide leader, Sunday school teacher, G.A.I.N. appointee, and mentor for new immigrant families.

While I have been tending my clients’ needs for the last 10 years, I also have learned what kind of problem new immigrants face everyday. Usually we cannot perceive the fact our multicultural society has its systemic flaw until we experience it directly or vicariously. That was the reason why I decided to work inside the system. I was lucky to be elected as a school trustee in 2005 and I worked hard to represent the needs of the people whose voice cannot be heard by studying and doing research the issues. I also attended numerous meetings and seminars. The following is the area I worked and get some results.

First, I have listened to people and tried to help them resolve what they complained about.

Second, I have tried to improve our ESL education delivery system. Especially, we should provide a two-way communication channel for ESL students’ parents to help them participate in their children’s education and learn Canadian culture and one possibility is to implement an ESL PAC for every school.

Third, I have pointed out that we need to detect early students with special needs and to provide proper programs to help them develop to their full potential.

Fourth, to make our public school system and our community more inclusive and safer, we need to implement to the hate crime statistics act. For example, the USA has a unified hate crime reporting system and deals with crime based on bigotry effectively from 1995. It’s overdue and if we could one based on the hate crime statistics act, we could prevent victimization motivated by bigotry. Bullying in school would be decreased to a minimum level.

I want to contribute to betterment of Burnaby because this is my children’s hometown and I love this town, too.
