Info | Mike Schreiner, candidate for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock, is a highly regarded advocate for independent business and sustainable communities as well as a tireless promoter of Ontario food and farmers.
Mike Schreiner believes that the Green Party’s vision of a prosperous, sustainable, diversified economy rooted in communities and neighbourhoods – and served by vibrant small and medium-sized businesses – is essential to the residents of Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock. He wants to bridge the divide between urban and rural in order to redevelop vibrant regional economies in Ontario. What’s more, Mike wants Ontarians to understand that the profitability of family farms is critical to Ontario’s economic and environmental health.
Family and community are important to Mike. He’s happily married to his wife Sandy with whom he’s raising two, beautiful, young daughters. Mike grew up on a grain and livestock farm, and, to this day, he still assists his mother in managing the family’s farm from afar since his father passed in 2007.
A respected, successful entrepreneur and businessperson, Schreiner most recently worked for an award-winning non-profit organization that brings farmers and consumers together to promote financially, socially and environmentally sustainable local food systems. Prior to that, Mike ran a food distribution business for over 10 years that specialized in delivering local and natural foods to homes in Toronto. His work has taken him across the province where he has worked with farmers and independent businesses to promote local sustainable economies.
He is actively involved in his community having coached his daughter’s baseball team and served as treasurer for her daycare. Mike also serves on the steering committee of Green Enterprise Toronto, an association of over 400 small businesses in Toronto, and on the Board of Directors of FarmStart, a non-profit organization that assists new farmers in Ontario.
Mike is a frequent speaker and advisor to businesses and organizations interested in local food and farming, green business development, food security, and community economic development.
