He is a Financial Advisor with Murdock Banner Financial Group and the Audit Partner with Taylor, Hoskins & Shaw, CPAs, LLC. He and his family live in rural, central Johnson County. He was born in Jefferson City and grew up in a small town near Jefferson City.
Denny’s father was a Missouri high school math teacher and later a school administrator while his mother was an elementary school librarian. Due to low teacher salaries, both parents would take on second jobs to support their family. His grandparents were farmers, carpenters and a WWII veteran. Through their love and upbringing, they instilled values of hard work, honesty and dedication to community service in Denny.
Throughout high school, Denny was a leader as captain of the basketball team and Student Council President. He lettered in cross-country four years, basketball two years and track four years while earning membership into the National Honor Society. He earned all-state honors as the anchor leg of the 4x800 meter relay his junior year. It was during his time at Missouri Boys’ State in 1992 that Denny first experienced the political process and became interested in public service.
Upon graduating from Fatima High School in Westphalia, Missouri in 1993, Denny decided to attend Central Missouri State University on Missouri Boys’ State and Regent’s scholarships. By his earning a 4.0 GPA his first college semester, he was selected by CMSU as a recipient of a full-ride scholarship for his sophomore year. Denny was very involved in numerous service and fraternal organizations in college including the Accounting Students Association, Beta Alpha Psi Accounting Fraternity and Sigma Nu Fraternity. He diligently worked his way through college, holding various jobs such as farmhand, sales associate and part-time accountant. It was in college where Denny first met his wife, Michelle Colvin of Warrensburg, and they later married in August 1998. Upon graduating Cum Laude with a BSBA in Accounting in May 1998, Denny accepted a job offer as a Staff Auditor with Deloitte & Touche in Kansas City.
While working for Deloitte & Touche, Denny also served in former President Harry Truman’s old artillery battery in Independence, MO where he received an honorable discharge in 2000. The Missouri Army National Guard taught Denny the importance of teamwork and gave him a better understanding of the sacrifices our veterans have made for this country. As an auditor for
Deloitte & Touch and later McGladrey & Pullen, Denny specialized in auditing banks and financial institutions. He successfully passed the CPA and Ethics exam in 2002 to earn his Certified Public Accountant license from the Missouri State Board of Accountancy. In 2004 he also earned his Personal Financial Specialist credential from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants in 2004.
In 2004, Denny and his wife Michelle decided to move back to Warrensburg to be closer to family. Once back in Johnson County, Denny passed his series 7, series 66 and life/health insurance exams to become a Financial Advisor with Murdock Banner Financial Group (MBFG) in March 2004. Looking to expand his financial planning practice and utilize his prior
audit experience, he also became the Audit and Financial Planning Partner with Taylor, Hoskins & Shaw, CPAs, LLC (TH&S) in 2005. He currently maintains an office with both MBFG and TH&S, where he specializes in audits of governmental entities, in addition to financial planning for individuals and small businesses. Denny is a registered representative of Multi-Financial Securities Corporation, Member SIPC/FINRA, and a licensed life/health insurance agent.
