Info | KELSO, John Russell, a Representative from Missouri; born near Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio, March 23, 1831; received a classical training and was graduated from Pleasant Ridge College, Missouri, in June 1859; during the Civil War served in the Union Army as a member of the Twenty-fourth Missouri Infantry, the Fourteenth Missouri Cavalry, and the Eighth Missouri Cavalry, and was captain of Company M; elected as an Independent Republican to the Thirty-ninth Congress (March 4, 1865-March 3, 1867); was not a candidate for renomination in 1866; principal of Kelso Academy, Springfield, Mo., 1867-1869; moved to Modesto, Calif., in 1872 and to Longmont, Colo., in July 1885; author and lecturer; died in Longmont, Boulder County, Colo., January 26, 1891; interment on his estate near Longmont; subsequently the remains were cremated and the ashes scattered.
