| Info | Frank Joseph Ahern, a computer consultant and unsuccessful candidate in several campaigns for public office, including the presidency, died of cancer Monday at Veterans Administration Medical Center. He was 68. Mr. Ahern was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He atteded Jesuit and Samuel J. Peters high schools and received a master's degree from Tulane University in computer science. Mr. Ahern qualified as an independent candidate several times for the presidency. He last ran for office in 1992. He also ran for governor in 1967, state superintendent of education in 1971 and Orleans Parish School Board in 1972 and 1978.
He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict. He was awarded several citations for bravery, including three purple hearts with Gold Stars. As a machine gunner and infantry squad leader during World War II, Mr. Ahern took part in 16 landings in the Pacific. He was wounded twice on Iwo Jima, where he witnessed the Marines raising the flag on Mount Suribachi. In a 1954 interview while he and two other veterans were watching the opening at the Panorama Theater of "The Sands of Iwo Jima," Mr. Ahern recalled, "I was laying there with the squad when suddenly this man on my right said, 'Look. Look.' I turned around and there was the flag flying over Suribachi just like they show in the movie." After World War II, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps Reserve. Later, he volunteered for Korea and served with the 1st Marine Division. Mr. Ahern was later promoted to Captain and served as assistant inspector-instructor of the Louisiana Marine Corps Reserve Battalion.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. As a computer expert, Mr. Ahern had been a program system representative for the IBM Corp. Survivors include three sons, Kenneth, Patrick and Terry Ahern; a daughter, Kathy A. Pozdol; three brothers, James, Edward and Bill Ahern; two sisters, Lucille A. Purcelle and Elisa A. Pepperman; and a grandchild. A Mass will be said Friday at 11:30 a.m. at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd. A visitation will be held today from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and after 8 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery No. 1.
