Info | New Mexico Governor. He was known as an old fashioned glad-handing politician, who came from a family ranch to become the only three-term Governor of New Mexico. King began his political career in 1954, when he was elected to the Santa Fe Board of County Commissioners, and from 1959 he served five terms in the New Mexico House of Representatives. A Democrat, King was elected the 23rd Governor of New Mexico, serving from 1971 to 1975; later he was reelected to two non-consecutive terms (1979 to 1983, 1991 to 1995). His son, Gary K. King, became New Mexico State Attorney General.
