Info | Charlie Howe grew up in Carbondale, attending SIU in the 1960s. During his working years, he traveled, studied, and worked in a variety of places, courtesy of the U.S. Army and an adventurous spirit. Upon retirement from Boeing in 1998, he chose to return to his roots in Southern Illinois, bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge, and a willingness to share them.
Charlie Howe, the son of Rev. and Mrs. Charles E.F. Howe, graduated from University High in 1962 and enrolled at SIU. He joined the army in 1966, where he was trained as a linguist and radio intercept operator, and served two tours of duty in Vietnam. After his military service he completed a B.A. in Sociology from California State University at Northridge, and a B.B.A. in international business from the University of Hawaii. He continues to read widely, especially in the fields of technology and the environment.
Charlie is no stranger to hard work. Youthful job experiences include a summer on the Illinois Central Railroad and time as a baker, taxi-driver, mailclerk, rooming house manager, and janitor, as well as work in door-to-door sales of estate-planning. Later he worked in the Oklahoma oilfields as a fieldhand, tool dresser, and dispatcher. In 1983 he left the oil industry and began studying aircraft mechanics, which led to work first in the construction of the B-1 bomber for Rockwell, and later as an aircraft inspector of 747s for Boeing in Seattle, Washington, where he was a member of International Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 751.
Currently Charlie gives back to his community through volunteer work. He serves on the board of directors of the Green Earth nature preserves. He is a “Friend of the Land” with the Land Institute, a Salina, Kansas-based organization that supports sustainable agriculture. As a believer in renewable energy and the homestead philosophy, he chops his own firewood and grows food by organic methods.
Charlie Howe has been active in the Green Party since 2000, at the local and state levels. He is currently Precinct Committeeperson for Carbondale’s 20th Precinct, and Chairperson of the Shawnee Green Party. In 2005 he ran as a candidate for Carbondale Township Trustee.
