| Info | Sandy, a long-time resident of Simcoe-North, was trained as a chemical engineering technician. He owns and operates EcoMedic Ecosystem Restoration Services, an environmental consulting company that specializes in restoring degraded ecosystems. He has worked in a variety of fields including waste water treatment, plastics manufacturing, waste reduction and ecological restoration.
Sandy gained municipal government experience as the administrator of the North Simcoe Waste Management Association (NSWMA) where he was responsible for a 4 million dollar budget and for coordinating the expansion of the recycling programs in four municipalities.
Thriving on new initiatives, Sandy has been instrumental in starting several environmental activist groups and has served on the boards of Trout Unlimited Canada and the Couchiching Conservancy. As a member of the Severn Sound, Remedial Action Plan (SSRAP) Public Advisory Committee he initiated and for three years coordinated the Natural Shorelines in Severn Sound Program. When the provincial government cut funding to the SSRAP it was Sandy who brought forward the idea of forming the Severn Sound Environmental Association, patterned after the NSWMA.
Restoring degraded ecosystems, especially streams, is Sandy’s real passion. His business is based on helping landowners manage their properties in an environmentally sustainable way as more and more people are realizing that we can’t continue to trash our environment.
Sandy lives in Oro-Medonte Township on his 47 acre property near the headwaters of Hogg Creek. He has recently established a conservation easement with the Couchiching Conservancy to protect the provincially significant wetland portion of his property.
“The Green Party of Canada is the only national party that bases its policies and platform on a written set of principles” says Sandy. “The Green Party is the only party whose policies are based in science and benefit future generations as well as our own. Clearly the other parties are unable to address the huge array of challenges facing mankind today. They can’t even work together in Ottawa for a year.”
“The most important change that must be initiated in government is electoral reform. With four national parties and the Bloc in Quebec the days of majority governments are over. We must have an electoral system that truly reflects the views of all Canadians. Once proportional representation is achieved our national parties will be forced to cooperate with one another.”
Sandy believes that well-being is not just how much stuff we have, but how healthy and fulfilling our lives are and how sustainable our communities are.
