Richard F. Celeste was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1937. After graduating Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Yale University in 1959, Ambassador Celeste attended Oxford University in England as a Rhodes Scholar.

After a short term as Staff Liaison Officer in the Peace Corps, Ambassador Celeste worked for 4 years as Special Assistant to the American Ambassador to India in New Delhi. Following this, Ambassador Celeste returned to Ohio where he served as a State Representative for 4 years and Lt. Governor for a further 4 years. He then moved to Washington, D.C. where he served as Director of the Peace Corps for 2 years before returning to Ohio to run for Governor. In 1982, Ambassador Celeste was elected Governor of Ohio.

Following 2 terms as Governor, Ambassador Celeste became a Managing Partner in the consulting firm, Celeste & Sabety, Ltd., located in Columbus, Ohio. Governor Celeste was sworn in as United States Ambassador to India on November 10, 1997 and on November 28, 1997, Ambassador Celeste presented his credentials to Indian President K.R. Narayanan.

Ambassador Celeste has also served as Chairman of the Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable, Chairman of the American Academy for the Advancement of Science Advisory Board, a member of the Secretary of Energy?s Advisory Board, a council member of Appropriate Technology International, and a Visiting Fellow in Public Policy at Case Western Reserve University. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Ambassador Celeste is married to Jacqueline Lundquist. The couple has one child. The Ambassador also has six grown children.
