| Info | Michael R. White (born 1951) is an American politician of the Democratic party, who served as mayor of Cleveland, Ohio for three terms, from 1989 to 2002. He was Cleveland's second African American mayor. White is credited with continuing the work of his predecessor George Voinovich in revitalizing the city. Some of his accomplishments include passing legislation making banks dispel lending policies that were restrictive to minorities, providing leadership for retaining a Cleveland Browns team in the NFL after the previous team moved to Baltimore to be renamed the Baltimore Ravens as well as building a new stadium for the Cleveland Browns, and construction of the Gateway stadium development.
Although initially very popular, White became increasingly autocratic in office and, faced with growing city budgetary woes, chose not to run for reelection in 2001. White retired to an alpaca farm near Newcomerstown, Ohio. In 2005 it was revealed that he may have taken bribes while in office.
