Description |
In early 2021 Holly Schepisi announced she would challenge 12 term incumbent Gerald Cardinale in the republican primary. Cardinale didn't expect an actual fight from Schepisi, after all he had been in office for 40 years. In February Cardinale died from an undisclosed illness. Schepisi sought the seat in a republican convention and narrowly won it over her former runningmate Robert Auth. Despite the divide among Bergen County Republicans, Schepisi ran unopposed in the primary.
Democrats recruited Ruth Dugan, the wife of former State Senator James Dugan of Hudson County.
This district is another that Joe Biden carried in 2020 that is represented by a republican, but Schepisi's winning track record in elections and moderate bonafides maker her the favorite to win this race.
