BBC Constituency Profile:
This constituency centres on Londonderry, Northern Ireland's second city. The seat has three major educational institutions including the University of Ulster campus at Magee. Derry is the principal retail centre in the north west of Ireland. Foyle has relatively high levels of deprivation.
The area traditionally had a strong manufacturing base centred on textiles and clothing. In recent years, there has been huge investment with new hotels, theatres, museums and galleries and shopping facilities opening. The city has one of the best examples of city walls in Europe. The estimated population of Foyle in 2013 was almost 102,000. Foyle has the second highest proportion of Catholics in Northern Ireland. In 1983 former civil rights leader and SDLP founder John Hume took the Foyle seat, and dominated the electoral scene for the next two decades. In 2005 he stood down from parliament, opening a vacancy filled by his successor as party leader, Mark Durkan.
