Description BBC Profile:
The current MP, Gerald Howarth, took over from the late Sir Julian Critchley, who retired from a long career in politics in 1997.

In 1992 the Conservatives polled over 58% of the vote but in 1997 they dropped to 42%. In 2001 and 2005 little changed.

At the election, boundary changes mean the seat gains part of Blackwater ward from North East Hampshire in exchange for part of Fleet North, part of Hartley Wintney, and all of Yateley East, Yateley North and Yateley West. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Located in North East Hampshire and close to the border with Surrey, Aldershot is perhaps best known as the traditional home of the British Army.

The constituency also encompasses the town of Farnborough, famous for its biennial international air show.

The constituency is largely urban but does include substantial areas of open countryside.

Farnborough is generally regarded as the birthplace of British flight and also supports a large number of the constituencys jobs as the home of the aeronautical research and development industry. A number of defence companies such as BAE Systems and Qinetiq are based there, and Nokia has its global research and development base in the town.
