Description |
Known as the "Home of the British Army", the seat of Aldershot is located in North East Hampshire, close to the border with Surrey. The British Army first moved to the heathland base at the height of the Crimean War, and with its Gurhka population, now boasts the highest number of Buddhists among constituencies in England and Wales, according to ONS 2011 Census figures.
The seat includes the international air show town of Farnborough, and a large number of jobs are found in the aeronautical research and development industry.
At 70.7%, it also has one of the higher proportions of people in employment. Sir Gerald Howarth has been Aldershot's Conservative MP since 1997, having taken over from the late Sir Julian Critchley, who held the seat for 27 years. In 2010, Sir Gerald won with 46.7% of the votes; the Liberal Democrats got 34.4%, Labour 12.1% and UKIP 4.5%.
