Description BBC Profile:
The constituency has always been held by a unionist of one party or another. Cecil Walker was the Ulster Unionist MP from 1983 until 2001 when he was defeated by Nigel Dodds of the DUP. Mr Dodds, a Cambridge-educated former civil servant who had been a Lord Mayor of Belfast, went on to increase his percentage majority in 2005, though his numerical majority of 5,188 was down by 1,200 due to a 9.4% fall in turnout.

The seat is to be enlarged for the 2010 election to include some suburban Newtownabbey wards from East Antrim and South Antrim. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result above.

The constituency takes in the northern end of the city of Belfast. It sits on Belfast Lough and includes the magnificent Belfast Castle.

The seat has a Protestant majority but has a substantial Catholic minority. The constituency's Ardoyne area has been the site of sectarian rioting but has been relatively calm in recent years.

The constituency is highly socially mixed. The areas around Belfast Castle include tree-lined avenues and large houses.
