BBC Constituency Profile:
The constituency sits on Belfast Lough and includes Belfast Castle and one of the highest spots in Belfast, Cave Hill. The constituency is highly socially mixed. The areas around Belfast Castle include tree-lined avenues and large houses. Other areas, around the lower Antrim Road, have high levels of deprivation. The Ardoyne area has been the site of sectarian rioting in the past. This constituency suffered a high level of violence during the Troubles.
Its population in 2013 was nearly 102,500 with the average age 37. The last census showed that more than 52% were employed. The census also revealed a fairly even split in Catholic (47%) and Protestant and other non-Catholic (46%) Christians.
The seat has traditionally been held by a unionist. Cecil Walker was the Ulster Unionist MP from 1983 until 2001 when he was defeated by Nigel Dodds of the DUP. Mr Dodds was re-elected in 2005 and 2010.
