BBC Profile:
Labour's Estelle Morris beat the Conservatives' David Bevan in 1992 by 162 votes and held the seat until standing down before the 2005 general election, when the seat was won by John Hemming, for the Liberal Democrats, with a majority of 2,672.

At the election boundary reconfiguration, the seat has gained part-wards from Birmingham Sparkbrook and Small Heath (Acocks Green and South Yardley) and Birmingham Hodge Hill (Stechford and Yardley North). Suburban Birmingham Yardley has none of the inner-city characteristics found in many of Birmingham's other constituencies.

The constituency's largest area of employment is public administration, education and health. Manufacturing and construction are also important.
