Description |
This seat is one of the few Labour/Liberal Democrat marginals in the country and the most marginal seat in Birmingham. Sitting Labour MP Estelle Morris, the former Education Secretary, is standing down. The constituency is a residential area on the eastern outskirts of Birmingham bordering the seats of Meriden and Solihull. Unlike some of inner-city Birmingham, unemployment is only just above the national average and there is a relatively small ethnic minority population. But this is a working-class constituency: the number of managers and professionals stands at just 20%. 68% of properties are owner-occupied, but there are a significant number of council tenants - 19%.
