Description Vancouver, Canada was chosen to host the XXI Olympic Winter Games on the second ballot in Prague on July 02, 2003.

Eight cities placed bids for the Games with four being chosen as "Candidate Cities" on August 28, 2002. The four cities that did not make the short-list were Andorra la Vella, Jaca(Spain), Harbin(China) and Sarajevo. Berne, Switzerland withdrew its bid on September 27, 2002 after almost 80% voted against a referendum to fund the Games.

The final decision was made by the full IOC membership at the 115th IOC Session in Prague on July 02, 2003. Salzburg, Austria was eliminated on the first ballot and PyeongChang, Korea was narrowly defeated on the second ballot giving Vancouver the win.
