Description This is the northernmost of Liverpool's five seats which first fell to Labour in 1964. Eric Heffer took it from the Tories and represented the constituency until his death in 1991 and in the meantime transformed Walton from a Conservative into a Labour stronghold - mirroring the trend city-wide. During the 1950s, the Tories consistently received over half the vote. They polled 6% or 1,726 votes at the last count. Walton includes both Liverpool's Premiership football teams, Liverpool at Anfield and Everton at Goodison Park. Unemployment here is high. Walton registers the tenth largest percentage of people requiring a carer for more than 20 hours per week. The constituency also contains the second highest amount of terraced housing nationwide - 59.5% - much of it run down. After Eric Heffer's death, there was an extremely bitter contest to replace him. Peter Kilfoyle finally won both the nomination and the seat, the opposition coming from the militant wing within his own party and the Liberal Democrats in the by-election. Kilfoyle has polled strong majorities ever since and finished the 2001 poll as Labour's fifth safest seat.
