The original incarnate of the Liberal Party ceased with its 1988 merger with the Social Democratic Party to become the modern Liberal Democrats. A minor sect of the party which opposed the merger continued independently of the Liberal Democrats and has retained strength in a few local areas of Britain, namely the Wyre Forest district council and the Tuebrook ward of the Liverpool city council.
