Description |
BBC Profile:
Sir Kenneth Thompson held the seat for the Tories until 1964 when Eric Heffer won the seat he was to serve until his death in 1991. He was succeeded at the ensuing by-election by the current member, Peter Kilfoyle.
Kilfoyle, who is standing down at the election, won by a majority of 15,957 in 2005, after a 3% swing towards the Liberal Democrats.
At the election, the seat gains four wards from Liverpool West Derby, and a part-ward each from Liverpool Riverside and Liverpool Wavertree. It loses a part-ward to Liverpool Riverside and two part-wards to Liverpool West Derby. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
This is the northernmost seat in Liverpool and is home to the iconic football grounds of Liverpool (Anfield) and Everton (Goodison Park).
Walton's economic past was based on the maritime success of the city as a whole.
Apart from the two football clubs, the biggest employers and revenue generators in the constituency are the two large prisons, Altcourse Prison and HMP Liverpool (Walton).
Both Everton and Liverpool football clubs have ambitious redevelopment plans. The former wants to move out of the city centre altogether to the neighbouring borough of Knowsley, while the latter has publicised plans for a 71,000-seat stadium, which the clubs owners would like to see built by 2011.
