Description |
Special election held to fill the vacancy occasioned by the death of Walter F. Pool.
Use of Incorrect District Boundary
The legislature had re-districted the state since the 1882 election. When news arrived in Raleigh that Walter Pool had died, Gov. Jarvis was out of town and Lt. Gov. Robinson issued the writ for a special election using the new district boundary. Many people pointed out correctly that the special election was for the old district and not the new one, and Judge (and future Governor) Fowle directed that the election be held in the old district (for example, the Raleigh State Chronicle ran an article on the issue on 9/29/1883). Eventually, the new lines were used; had the old lines been used, Pool would have been elected.
Republican nomination
The Republican district convention was held in Edenton on 10/25/1883. The delegates nominated C.C. Pool on the first ballot over E.A. White. Pool was the brother of the deceased Representative.
