| Description | 'Big Tent' party combining an awkward mix of Muslim- and Malayaga Tamilar-interest politics and Sinhalese Buddhist nationalism. Party also somehow jumbles support for economic liberalization with 'progressive' left wing policies. Party began as an alliance launched by indignant United National Party members of parliament, led out of the UNP by opposition Leader and presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa, and joined on February 12, 2020 by the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and the Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA). Party has been chaired by Gampatha District MP and former military commander Sarath Fonseka since January 25, 2021 [Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB); Peace — People's Power]. |
