DescriptionIt looked like one more campaign stump for a man who served two terms as Alabama's governor.

Guy Hunt made sure to shake hands and speak with just about everybody in the building — no easy task considering there was an overflow crowd at the rest area on Interstate 65.

He wasn't there looking for votes. He wouldn't need to work this crowd if his name were among the candidates on the ballot this June.

Most of the people present for the occasion were among his biggest supporters during his years as governor.

He was there, instead, as the guest of honor. The rest area he authorized as governor was officially named in his honor on Thursday.

"It really is a great honor," Hunt said. "This is the first building I know of that's been named in my honor. This is really wonderful. Some of the people who are here, I haven't seen in a long time."

Public officials past and present were there to pay tribute to Hunt. Attorney General Troy King and State Tourism Director Lee Sentell were among the current state officials in attendance. Former Republican Party Chairman Elbert Peters and several former members of Hunt's cabinet were in attendance, as was former Chief Justice and gubernatorial candidate Roy Moore.

"He had a lot of friends," said Cullman Mayor Don Green, who was among several local officials in attendance.

Hunt said he was touched by the fact so many people traveled a great distance to appear at the dedication. He was especially pleased by the members of his cabinet who were able to make the trip.

"It's good to have a homecoming," he said.

Although some of the officials in attendance spoke, it was Hunt who took center stage, using a little humor about the honor being bestowed on him.
