He started and finished school at Holly Pond High School where he excelled as a Public Speaker winning numerous contests. He graduated Salutatorian of his graduating class in 1950. He finished high school at the age of 16.
Guy married Helen Ann Chambers on February 25th, 1951 and they celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in February, 2001.
He entered the U. S. Army on July 13, 1954. He was released from the U. S. Army on April 13, 1956 and returned home to farm, specializing in egg production.
While in the Army, Guy and Helen's first child, Pamella, was born on October 1, 1954. Pamella was injured at birth and suffered brain damage resulting in mental retardation. She has always lived with her parents. She requires constant care and must use a walker to remain mobile.
Their second daughter, Sherrie was born on December 30th, 1956. She is married to David Williams and they have three children. Their son Keith was born on May 9th, 1959, is divorced and has four children. Their third daughter, Lynn was born on February 23, 1963 and is married to Doug Harris.
He was ordained a minister on September 6, 1958 at Mt. Vernon Primitive Baptist Church, Baileyton, Alabama and has continuously served his home church for almost 44 years.
He ran for the State Senate in 1962 before Republicans were being elected and lost by 1,000 votes. He was a candidate for Probate Judge in 1964 and won the election. He was the youngest Probate Judge in the State. He was re-elected in 1970. He declined to run again because he felt there should be a two term limitation on public office holders.
In 1976, Guy was selected as State Chairman for the Ronald Reagan campaign for President. Alabama selected all their delegates for Governor Reagan and Guy served as the Chairman of the Republican delegation to Kansas City.
In 1978, he was the Republican nominee for Governor. He was defeated by Fob James.
He served again as State Chairman for Ronald Reagan in 1980 and this time Ronald Reagan was elected President.
Appointed by President Reagan as State Director of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee, Guy served from May 1981 until March 1985. He then resigned and began his campaign for Governor.
November, 1986, Guy was elected the first Republican Governor in 112 years with the largest vote that had ever been received by a candidate for Governor at that time. He was re-elected in 1990 to a second term as Governor.
Since April, 1993, he has continued to Pastor churches and take care of the farm which has been in the family for three generations.
Guy is now the same age President Ronald Reagan was when he was elected President. He hopes he can accomplish as much for Alabama as President Reagan did for America at this mature and experienced age.
