DescriptionThis new constituency consists of the whole of the old Kilmarnock and Loudoun seat with the addition of four wards from the old Carrick, Cumnock & Doon Valley seat. The old constituency of the same name has been extended to take in a sprinkling of small towns and villages in south Ayrshire. Kilmarnock is by far the largest town in the seat. It is industrial by nature with both heavy and light engineering. A big employer is the former Johnnie Walker whisky distillery and bottling plant, taken over by Diageo last year. East of Kilmarnock lies the small town of Galston with its meat canning factory. It exports canned haggis among other things. Nearby Darvel was once famous for its lacemaking, but now, along with the small towns of Greenholm and Newmains, many residents work in Kilmarnock. Alexander Fleming, who developed penicillin, is Darvel's famous son and there is a memorial garden to him in the town. The extension to the seat, although rural in aspect, has industrial roots in mining. Although the pits are long gone, there are several open cast mines in the area which provide employment. Mauchline is famous for its connection to the bard Robert Burns, who married and set up home there with his wife Jean Armour; their house is now a museum.
