InfoJanette was born in Glasgow and attended Uddingston Grammar School. She graduated from Paisley University with a PhD in environmental management in conjunction with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency. Janette has also worked as a Project Engineer with Babtie Group, as part of their environmental modelling group, where she worked on a wide variety of environmental and flood studies for customers like the Environment Agency and Scottish Water. She remains committed to fighting for sustainable communities, in particular for more efficient water supplies and better flood defences.

Following her PhD, Janette undertook a Technology Entrepreneurship at Strathclyde University, where she mentored students and judged business plan competitions. Janette also founded Scotland's new network of women in business and was described as "one of Scotland's new economy pioneers" by the Sunday Times. She currently works as the Knowledge Transfer Manager for Glasgow Caledonian University, where she helps researchers transfer their ideas out into business.

Janette is also the Administrative Director of the Glasgow Junior Chamber of Commerce and takes part in regular debates, sometimes on a national level. Her outside interests include travelling and playing golf.
