InfoGary holds a BA (Hons) degree and Advanced Diploma in Educational Management. He has held employment at the Cabinet Office in addition to air traffic control and a major airline. He has established a charitable trust, provided training and consultancy to business and held the post of Company Secretary. Gary has also represented Scottish business on overseas trade missions.

Educational employment has taken him across the globe to international schools and Community, Further and Primary education in Scotland, including promoted posts.

A keen pilot, he has flown in North America, the Middle East and Europe. Other hobbies include classical music, ski-ing and photography. He has also sailed, canoed and been involved in motor sport. A member of Kyle and Carrick Civic Society, Gary also supports the Woodland Trust and the RAF Benevolent Fund.

As a community councillor in Ayr he specialised in planning issues pertinent to business, residents, tourism and architectural heritage.

Gary has stood for local government in East Ayrshire, in Mauchline (1999) and Cumnock (2003). During the early nineties, he initiated Conservative government policy on the introduction of Devolved School Management and Incorporation of Further Education Colleges in addition to Scottish Local Government reform. He successfully lobbied for East Ayrshire Coalfield Partnership funding which delivered in excess of £3.5 million of social funding into the Cumnock area.

More recently he has prepared consultation papers on local government and the Scottish Parliament, Scottish Qualification for Headship and the future of aviation. In the past he has made representations to various Boundary Commissions.
