This riding has existed since the 1969 election and has always been NDP. It's in the southwestern Manitoba city of Brandon, east of 1st Street N/Ross Avenue/Knowlton Drive/Assiniboine River/18th Street. Brandon is the second-largest city in Manitoba. It lies on the Assiniboine River, approximately 225 km west of Winnipeg. The city serves as an industrial and marketing centre in the heart of rich farmland.
The population in 2001 was 19,115. The average family income was $46,046, with an unemployment rate of 7.1 per cent. The leading industry was health and social services (14.4%) followed closely by manufacturing (13.6%).
