Georgia is a southwestern Asian republic, bordering the Black Sea between Turkey and Russia. With its seat in Tbilisi, it is led by a democraticly elected government under the leadership of its president who is both Head of State and Government and the unicameral parliament called the Umaghiesi Sabcho, or Supreme Council.
Georgia assumed its independence from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics on April 9, 1991. Before it was a state of the Soviet Union, it was a state of Soviet Russia until May 26, 1918. Georgia adopted its current constitution on October 17, 1995.
