Description |
Abkhazia was an autonmous republic in Georgia since 1931. After the collapse of the Soviet Union Georgian and Abkhazian nationalists clashed over the area's status within the new nation of Georgia. On July 23, 1992 the Abkhazian government declared independence, no country has as of yet recognized their claim. This marked the start of the Abkhazian War, between the Abkhazian sepratists and Georgia. A week later Georgia closed the local parliament and occupied Abkhazia. A retalitation was able to create a stalmate until July 1993. May 15, 1994, the two "nations" have a ceasefire.
National Flag Description:
The design of the flag is based on the flag of Northern Caucasia, which was in use 1918-1919. The palm of a hand was a symbol of Abkhaz statehood in the 8th-10th centuries and the stars and stripes represent the seven historic districs of Abkhazia. (Seven is a sacred number often found in Abkhaz mythology, religion and folk art.) The stripes in green and white symbolize the tolerance of Caucasian people and the peaceful co-existence of Islam (green) and Christianity (white).
