Description |
This east-central Calgary riding is bordered on the east by 52nd Street, on the north by 32nd Avenue, on the west, in part, by Barlow and Deerfoot Trails, and on the south by 17th and 8th Avenues. The 2004 redistribution shifted some voters formerly in the south of this riding into Calgary-Fort.
Manufacturing and retail are the main employers in Calgary East. The average income here, $55,392, is below the provincial average, and 19. 6 per cent of residents are considered low income. It is a multicultural riding: almost 30 per cent of residents are immigrants, with 7.5 per cent identifying themselves as Muslim and 5.9 per cent as Buddhist. Almost one-third don't speak English at home. One in every 12 people here identifies themselves as Chinese, and about four per cent are aboriginal. Just under 43 per cent of Calgary East residents were born in Alberta.
