Description |
Situated in northeastern Newfoundland, this riding includes the Exploits Islands, Change Islands, North and South Twillingate Islands, New World Island, Fogo Island, Funk Island and Cottel Island.
In 2001, the population here was 89,743. Communities include historic Bonavista, the ferry hub of Lewisporte, pulp- and paper-producing Grand Falls-Windsor, and Bishop's Falls. Almost all residents are lifelong Newfoundlanders – fewer than one per cent are from outside of Canada.
The riding is rich in natural resources, with forestry and some mining. In Gander, the international airport and Canadian Forces base support a number of small businesses. Still, wealth in Bonavista-Exploits is elusive: With an average family income of $42,942, this is the fourth poorest riding in Canada. Unemployment was 28.9 per cent at the time of the last census. Slightly more than four per cent of residents have a university degree.
Bonavista-Exploits was created in the 2004 redistribution, by combining nearly 62,000 people from Gander-Grand Falls with about 28,000 from Bonavista-Trinity-Conception.
Population: 89,743
NOTE: Known as "Bonavista-Exploits" throughout the 2004 election, this riding's name was changed to "Bonavista-Gander-Grand Falls-Windsor" directly afterwards. The new name is said to be a more accurate reflection of the area.
