Description |
This is a mainly suburban riding located in the northeast end of the city of Winnipeg. It runs between the Red River in the west and the eastern limits of the city. The southern boundary is Mission Street, Plessis Road, St. Boniface Road, Murdock Road and Dugald Road. The northern boundary is Oakland Avenue, McLeod Avenue, Grassie Boulevard, Perfanick Drive, Angela, the CP Rail line and the Winnipeg city limits.
Bus and furniture manufacturers are major employers here.
The immigrant population is almost 13 per cent. Only 9.6 per cent listed "Canadian" as their ethnic origin in the 2001 census.
The average family income was $54,615 in 2001 and unemployment was 6.1 per cent.
The riding of Winnipeg-Transcona was created in 1986 from 60 per cent of Winnipeg-Birds Hill and 19 per cent of Winnipeg North Centre. In 1996, it added a small area from St. Boniface. In 2004, the name was changed to Elmwood-Transcona.
