| Info | Born in Albuquerque in 1932 to Italian immigrant parents, Domenici and his four sisters were taught early the values that continue to guide him today as one of the most respected members of the U.S. Senate. Growing up, Pete was active in both high school and college sports and later pitched professional baseball for the Albuquerque Dukes, a farm club for the old Brooklyn Dodgers.
A graduate of St. Mary's High School, Pete Domenici earned an education degree from the University of New Mexico in 1954, and subsequently taught math at Albuquerque's Garfield Junior High School.
In 1958, he graduated with a law degree from the University of Denver and returned home to marry Nancy Burke and enter private practice.
Law School GradAs Pete and Nancy began their family and built his law practice, Domenici became involved in local city politics. But he often lamented to his friends that Albuquerque needed new, stronger leadership in city hall. After hearing enough of Pete's complaining, a small group of friends challenged him to either "put up or shut-up." They told Pete that he should either run for public office or quit complaining.

With the support of his friends and family, Pete Domenici in 1966 launched his public service career by winning election to the Albuquerque City Commission. The next year, Domenici was elected to serve as the city's Commission Chairman, equivalent then to Mayor. As Mayor, Domenici concentrated on downtown redevelopment and job creation. He successfully led the effort to revitalize downtown Albuquerque, build the convention center, and recruit several large employers to the Duke City.
In 1972, New Mexicans elected Pete Domenici to represent them in the U.S. Senate. His election marked the first time in 38 years that state voters had chosen a Republican to represent them in the Senate. With his reelection in 1996, Domenici became the first New Mexican elected to serve five full six-year terms in the Senate.
